John began his career at Toyota Motor Corporation in 1984, taking on the role of Cost Accountant in the Spares Parts Division. During this period, he became highly proficient in the advanced costing systems developed by Toyota, which were considered unparalleled in the motor industry among original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) at that time.

John later joined Southern Suns as Assistant to the Financial Director, where he was tasked with enhancing managerial reporting to Board level. He was soon promoted to the position of Group Development Accountant, where his responsibilities included assessing new and refurbished hotels and managing the accounting for these developments.
